Background

Oticon is one of the most established names in prescription hearing care, known for premium sound processing and a long history of innovation through local audiology clinics. Unlike over-the-counter brands, Oticon products are fit and programmed through a professional hearing test and in-person clinic experience. Soundly partners with thousands of local clinics nationwide and can connect you with a provider that specializes in fitting Oticon Zeal.

Oticon Zeal is a notable new addition to that lineup because it brings premium prescription technology and Bluetooth streaming into a very small in-ear form factor. Traditionally, many of the best hearing aids have launched first in a receiver-in-canal style, where the body of the device sits behind the ear and there is more room for microphones, batteries, and processing components.

What makes Oticon Zeal different is that it offers an in-ear design without giving up some of the features people often have to leave behind when they move to a smaller device. In particular, Zeal stands out for combining a discreet fit, rechargeable batteries and Bluetooth streaming.

What’s New

Oticon Zeal introduces a few meaningful advances that make it stand out in the prescription in-ear category.

Bluetooth Streaming in an In-Ear Design

One of the biggest breakthroughs with Oticon Zeal is that it supports Bluetooth streaming (both iPhone and Android) in a very small in-ear format. That means users can stream phone calls, podcasts, and other audio directly to the hearing aids, something that has often been unavailable in this style because Bluetooth signal struggles to reach devices that sit deep in the ear canal.

Oticon solves this with a built-in antenna system integrated into the pull tab. In real-world testing, this design delivered a strong and consistent connection, with streaming range that felt comparable to Oticon’s receiver-in-canal devices.

Small, Discreet Form Factor

Zeal is designed to sit deeply and discreetly in the ear canal, making it a strong option for people who want a lower-profile hearing aid. For many wearers, it will be difficult to see when in place.

Oticon achieves this tiny size by using a relatively new encapsulation approach. The result is a hearing aid that feels much smaller than many people would expect given its feature set.

Premium Sound Processing

Oticon Zeal uses the same chip and core sound processing technology found in Oticon Intent, the company’s flagship receiver-in-canal platform. That is a meaningful detail, because it suggests this product is not simply a cosmetic alternative — it is designed to deliver sound performance in line with Oticon’s top-tier prescription devices.

In our hands-on tests, Oticon Zeal performed well in everyday speech situations, meetings, phone calls, and more dynamic listening environments.

Rechargeable Battery + Portable Charging Case

Oticon Zeal comes with a premium rechargeable case that includes portable charging, so the case itself does not need to be plugged into the wall during every charge. Oticon’s data suggests up to 20 hours of battery life per charge, including around 4 hours of streaming.

That battery estimate appears solid for all-day use, and real-world testing in the transcript suggests performance may even exceed that number in some cases.

Comfortable Curved Fit

The hearing aid has a curved shape designed to follow the natural bend of the ear canal, which helps it feel secure and comfortable in use. While Zeal places a bit more material in the ear than a receiver-in-canal tip, the fit still appears natural and wearable over long periods.

This design also seems to help balance two goals at once: maintaining a fairly open, natural listening experience while also delivering stronger sound fidelity during streaming.

Companion App

Oticon Zeal works with the Oticon Companion app, which allows users to adjust volume, shape sound with a basic equalizer, tune streaming audio, check battery status, locate devices, and access remote care through their local hearing professional.

The app is simpler than some competitors, but that will likely feel appropriate for many users since Zeal is professionally fit in clinic. It offers the essentials without overwhelming the user.

Our Take

Oticon Zeal is one of the more interesting prescription hearing aids we’ve seen in a while because it meaningfully closes the gap between in-ear and receiver-in-canal devices.

In the past, choosing an in-ear product often meant accepting compromises — especially around Bluetooth streaming and, in some cases, overall performance. Based on the review material you shared, Zeal changes that equation. It offers a very small, discreet design, strong Bluetooth performance, premium sound processing, and all-day rechargeable battery life in one package.

For the right person, that is a compelling combination. This feels especially well suited to someone who wants a more hidden hearing aid, wears hats or glasses regularly, uses hearing protection, or simply prefers not to have anything sitting behind the ear.

The main tradeoff is that, compared with a receiver-in-canal device, there is naturally a bit more hardware sitting inside the ear canal. Some users may still prefer the slightly lighter feeling of a traditional behind-the-ear option. But importantly, this no longer appears to be a decision driven by major sacrifices in sound or streaming.

Overall, Oticon Zeal is a standout option for anyone who wants premium prescription performance in a discreet in-ear style.
