You type "hearing aids" into Amazon. Suddenly, you’re staring at hundreds of options ranging from $100 to $800. Half of them claim to have "AI technology" or "crystal clear sound."

It’s tempting to just pick one and hit that familiar “Add to Cart” button. Amazon’s got next-day shipping, easy returns, and you already know how it all works.

Buying hearing aids is about more than just the device itself—it’s worth thinking through the support, fit, and follow-up that make them work in real life.

Here’s what you need to know.

Key Takeaways
Key Takeaways:
  • Amazon offers convenience but lacks hearing health expertise. There's no one to help match your hearing loss to the right product.
  • Product curation matters. Amazon sells everything—including many hearing aids that aren't comfortable for daily wear (based on our tests).
  • Same prices. Prices are typically the same across retailers.
  • Some of the best brands aren't on Amazon. You could miss out on options that are better suited to your needs (like Nuance Audio).
  • You're choosing between shipping and specialized support. Faster shipping or expert guidance—you decide what matters more.

Hearing Aid Market Guide

The Hearing Aid Market: A Quick Primer

Understanding your options for better hearing

Option One: The Traditional Clinic

The Process
Visit a local clinic, get a hearing test, and work with a professional to fit prescription devices from brands like Phonak, Oticon, or ReSound.
Experience Quality
It's a high-quality experience with professional guidance and custom fitting.
Cost Range: $5,000 to $7,000

Option Two: Buy OTC Hearing Aids Online

FDA Rule Change
Thanks to a 2022 FDA rule change, you can now purchase over-the-counter hearing aids online and have them shipped to your door.
Effectiveness
These devices can work well—but are best for mild to moderate hearing loss.
Convenience
Direct-to-consumer convenience with lower costs and faster access.

Not sure where you stand?

Take a hearing test before you start shopping. You need to know your baseline to make the right choice for your hearing needs.

Amazon’s Approach: The Everything Store

Amazon’s results are vast—hundreds of hearing aids at a wide range of prices. But it’s important to note that Amazon doesn’t directly curate what it sells.

The threshold to become a hearing aid seller on the platform is fairly low. That means good options get mixed in with options that are not great.

I’ve tested over 50 hearing aids—from clinic-grade models to the cheapest Amazon options.

Many of the budget products on Amazon aren’t comfortable to wear for more than an hour. Many claim “crystal-clear sound” or “advanced noise reduction,” but they can’t handle a door slam or restaurant.

Not all budget options fall short—ELEHEAR Beyond is a great example. It costs around $399, has Bluetooth, handles background noise well, and you can wear it all day. But on Amazon, it's mixed with dozens of lower-quality alternatives.

Additionally, some of the best brands don’t sell on Amazon at all. Take Nuance Audio, which makes hearing aids built into eyeglass frames.

The microphones sit in the armband, and the sound gets directed to your ears through open-ear speakers. It’s innovative and effective—but invisible if you're only searching on Amazon.

Bottom line: Amazon offers plenty of choice but little guidance. You’re on your own when it comes to separating the best and worst products.

The Alternative: Retailers That Focus on Hearing

Specialty retailers like Soundly take a different approach. Instead of listing everything, we focus entirely on hearing health and only offer products we’ve vetted and believe in.

We carry a curated selection from trusted brands—ranging from around $300 to $2,650—with options for all kinds of budgets and preferences. If it’s on our site, it’s something we’d recommend to a friend or family member.

Support is built in from the start. If you call or text us, you’ll reach someone who knows hearing aids inside and out—not a general customer service line. We’ll help you understand your hearing loss, talk through the options, and find the product that fits your needs.

Once your devices arrive, we include a complimentary setup call with a licensed audiologist and offer ongoing help with adjustments and questions. Our shipping is typically two business days— a bit slower than Amazon, but with support that doesn’t stop at the checkout screen.

Bottom line: We might not have everything, but we have the right things—and the guidance to go with it. If hearing better is your goal, a specialized experience can make all the difference.

What You’re Really Choosing: Speed vs. Support

Amazon Wins on Convenience

  • Prime delivery means you can get hearing aids tomorrow.
  • Returns are easy—you can drop them at Whole Foods.
  • The interface is familiar and fast.

But You Give Up Support

When you call Amazon, you're likely talking to someone who just handled a blender return—not someone trained in hearing care.

They can’t read your hearing test.

They can’t tell you whether the Sony CRE-C20 or Sennheiser All Day Clear is a better match for your needs.

Specialized Retailers Work Differently

Call a focused hearing retailer, and you’ll talk to someone who thinks about hearing aids all day. They can:

  • Help you compare models
  • Offer setup support
  • Troubleshoot real issues based on your hearing loss

This support can make or break your experience. Choosing the wrong hearing aid can lead to frustration—and in some cases, people give up on hearing aids altogether because of a poor first try.

Pricing Check: It’s All the Same

OTC hearing aid prices are basically identical everywhere.

Amazon, Soundly, and other online retailers typically sell the same products at the same prices—and most will price match.

The real difference is what comes with your purchase and which brands are available.

When to Choose Which Option

Choose Amazon if:

  • You need the product tomorrow
  • You know exactly which model you want
  • You’re comfortable setting it up on your own
  • You strongly prefer the Amazon experience

Choose a Specialized Retailer if:

  • You want help choosing the right product for your hearing loss
  • You care about ongoing support
  • You’re new to hearing aids and want guidance
  • You don’t mind waiting a couple of days for shipping

What Matters Most: Getting the Right Fit

Whether you buy from Amazon or a specialized retailer, the goal is the same: hearing aids that actually work for your life.

My advice:

✅ Start with a hearing test.
✅ Understand your hearing loss.
✅ Then choose a product that fits your needs and your lifestyle.

If Amazon’s convenience is a top priority, just be extra careful. Stick to well-known brands. Read reviews carefully. And know what you’re getting.

If you’re leaning toward a specialized retailer, ask questions. A good one should be able to clearly explain their recommendations and help you understand your options.
