Sontro OTC hearing aids come from a U.S.-based startup called Soundwave Hearing. The founding team has a long history in hearing health and hopes to bring that industry experience directly to the consumer through their new product.

Sontro hearing aids use disposable batteries and do not allow Bluetooth streaming at this time. To customize your Sontro hearing aids, you will place them in your ears and use the app to take a short hearing test. The devices then work behind the scenes to change their sound output to match the frequencies where you need amplification.

One thing that makes Sontro unique is its partnership with the hearing care company Amptify. Each pair of hearing aids comes with a month of free onboarding care from Amptify's hearing experts.

Sontro hearing aids are no-frills compared to premium devices on the market. They do not come with Bluetooth streaming or rechargeable batteries but they are also significantly more affordable than the national average. Sontro hearing aids do offer a smartphone hearing test that customizes the devices to match your hearing loss. Sontro hearing aids are controlled by the OtoTune app, where you can make adjustments to programs, volume, and sound quality.

How It Works

Order Sontro hearing aids directly through the HearSoundwave site. All orders come with free shipping, and you can return your hearing aids for any reason within the first 45 days and receive a full refund.

Your hearing aids will arrive in 4-6 business days. You'll get all the accessories you need along with step-by-step instructions on how to customize your hearing aids at home.

If you have issues you can speak to the Sontro customer service team via phone during business hours.

The breakdown

Sontro is a good option for someone who wants the smallest behind-the-ear product possible and prefers to program their own devices.

If you are looking for a reference point, Sontro is very similar in price and features to Lexie's range of hearing aids.

The tech inside

The most notable feature of Sontro hearing aids is the otoTune app which allows users to self-fit the devices to match their hearing loss. The app has a nice built-in feature that measures the background noise in your environment. If you are in a loud location, it will prompt you to move somewhere else before proceeding with the test. Once you begin, the app will play a series of sounds through your hearing aids. When you hear the sound in your right or left ear, you will tap R or L.

Once your hearing test is complete, you can move over to the “control” tab on the app to adjust the volume or programs.

Toggle from right to left to move from “automatic” to “quiet” and “noise”. You can make even more adjustments inside the “quiet” and “noise” modes using the equalizer.

Getting up close

Sontro hearing aids sit behind the ear and come in grey or beige. Our team compared Sontro to other leading OTC hearing aids and found that these are the smallest behind-the-ear style OTC devices on the market.
